The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has recently launched the Search for Outstanding Filipino Seafarers.

The search intends to pay tribute to the hardworking men and women in the maritime sector who have greatly contributed to the growth of the industry and of the Philippine economy in general.

Labor and Employment Secretary Marianito Roque said in a DOLE report that the search is also in line with the declaration of 2010 by the International Machine Organization as the “International Year of the Seafarer”.

Roque, in a Memorandum Circular, established the first Search for the Outstanding Filipino Seafarers in the domestic and overseas employment.

Memorandum Circular No. 1 series of 2010, formally organized the committee for the search composed of the heads of some concerned government agencies and organizations.

These agencies and organizations are the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Maritime Training Council; Association of Marine Officers and Seamen?s Union of the Philippines, and the Joint Manning Group.

The search committee was also tasked to select nominees to the IMO Bravery at Sea Award.

According to the DOLE, in 2009, there are some 323, 384 seafarers deployed in overseas destinations such as Panama, Bahamas, Liberia, Singapore, Marshall Island, and others.
