Three Filipino prisoners will be returning home Friday as the Palau Supreme Court ordered their immediate deportation.
Jose Eller Daguinot, who has been serving time in jail for six years for a drug-related case, will be released along with Enrique Deatras and Mark Fred Jose, both convicted of child abuse.
Deatras started serving his child abuse sentence on May 14 last year and was due for release in 2010. Jose also started serving his jail term in 2008.
Philippine Ambassador Ramoncito Marino thanked Palau President Johnson Toribiong and Justice Minister Johnny Gibbons for allowing the release of the remaining Filipinos in jail.
The Palau president for his part said he asked the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to utilize the judicial process first.
Associate Justice Kathleen Salii on April 28, granted the AGO motion to modify the inmates’ sentences.
The motion stated that the deportation of the three will be a “substantial assistance to the republic in that it would reduce jail overcrowding.”
Justice Salii granted the motion and ordered their deportation at their expense.
Marino said he has requested the Philippine government for repatriation funds to send the three home.
