With the series of lay-offs by crisis-stricken companies seen to last for some time, the government is urging people to upgrade their skills for the workplace through training.
According to Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Director-General Augusto Syjuco, the export, electronics and manufacturing industries will continue to suffer from the steep decline in product demand.
But Syjuco added those affected by retrenchments should not lose hope. He said that while waiting for the economy to get better, they should start upgrading their skills, so that they will have bigger chances of landing jobs.
“Yung mga nawalan ng trabaho, hindi lamang yung mag-aantay ka hangang bumalik ulit ang trabaho. Habang nag-aantay ka i-upgrade mo iyong skills mo so that you can be a better worker,” Syjuco said.
In line with this, TESDA is now offering skills upgrading courses — for free!
TESDA courses range from commercial cooking, welding, automotive repair, bartending, and dressmaking, to information technology and call center training.
Students will also be given P60 transportation and food allowance daily.
“In 2008, we were able to train 200,000. but this year, we have the capacity to train 800,000 people.
Syjuco sayid TESDA’s P2 billion budget in 2008 has increased to P5.6 billion this year.
Aside from the P1 billion budget from the General Appropriations Act, TESDA has been given a ‘resiliency package’ by National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). — Apples Jalandoni, ABS-CBN News

Good day to you. I have been an OFW for 13 years in the Sultanate of Oman. I resigned months ago and went back home to Philippines with my two kids. Currently, I am unemployed and would like to know if you offer free training courses (such as Entrepreneurship, call center, culinary among others) and would like to know as well if you have training centers here in Cavite. I shall be pleased to await for your reply. Thank you and more power!
