Some 300 Filipinos based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will vie for an award in a cleanup campaign at the Al Mamzar Park and beach there this coming Friday (Oct. 30).
UAE news site Khaleej Times reported the Filipino groups will aim for a cash prize for the “Highest Collected Garbage” at the 6th Clean-Up Day there.
“At stake for the participating organizations are cash and trophies. The cash award is put up by supporters of the Dubai Municipality to motivate residents of Dubai to work hand in hand with the government in their own small ways as Dubai is our second home,” said Myrna
Anderson, president of Lightform International Photographers.
She said she expects more Filipino organizations to join the cause to clean up Al Mamzar from 7 to 10 a.m.
Last year, 1,000 groups joined the cleanup but half of them were groups of other nationalities.
Anderson said the annual Clean Up Day is the Filipino community’s way of helping the Dubai government drum up awareness to “Preserve our Environment and Natural Resources for a Sustainable Living.”
She said that some 1,000 tons of garbage were collected during the Clean Up Day initiated by Lightform International Photographers, whose 500 members photographed the event.
After the next Clean Up Day, the organization will hold an Environment Awareness Photo Competition on November 20.
It is open to students of the Photography Sessions conducted by the Lightform International Photographers.
“So far, 200 students from the Sharjah Women’s College, American University and the Men’s College have registered for the competition,” she added.
At stake is Dh3,000 for the first prize, Dh2,000 for second place and Dh1,000 for the third best entry courtesy sponsors supporting the Dubai Municipality in its environment awareness drive.
