United Nations and Philippine officials have started discussing the turnover of peacekeeping duties in the Golan Heights in Israel from Poland to the Philippines.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the commander of the UN Disengagement Observer Force met with Philippine envoys at the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv.

It said UNDOF commander Major General Wolfgang Jilke called on Ambassador Petronila Garcia and other embassy officials to discuss the preparations.

“General Jilke personally delivered invitations to the ceremony to the embassy officials and Armed Forces of the Philippines. The ceremony will be held at Camp Ziouani on the Israeli side,” it said on its website (www.dfa.gov.ph).

The Philippines’ peacekeeping contingent will assume duties in the Golan Heights on October 22.

Also during the call, Jilke stressed his policy of openness and transparency under his command of the UNDOF.

He added member nations are welcome to visit their respective forces at any time, as this policy adds up to the morale of the contingent in the Golan Heights.

The UNDOF was established through UN Security Council Resolution 350 (1974) and has served in the Golan Heights, the contentious border between Israel and Syria.
