Two Filipinos in Malaysia were given hefty jail sentences as well as 10 strokes of the cane each for possession of illegal drugs, an online news report said Thursday.
The Daily Express report said painter Mukim Tamang and seller Rena Hassan were given 10-year and 11-year jail sentences respectively by the Malaysian Sessions Court. Both Filipinos were also caned for the offense.
Police arrested Tamang, 49, on Dec. 11, 2007 at a roadside in Inanam Jaya, Inana for illegal possession of shabu. Hassan was arrested on Sept. 18, 2008 in Jalan Bukit Nanas for illegal possession of marijuana.
The court said the stiff penalties will act as a deterrent to offenders.
