Thirty-six overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) repatriated from strife-torn Libya arrived in the Philippines Wednesday afternoon.

Philippine government officials were on hand to meet the repatriated OFWs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, according to a report on GMA News TV.

Some of the OFWs had worked in Libya for several years and had raised a family there, but heeded the Philippine government’s appeal for them for voluntary repatriation to ensure their safety, the report said.

Labor officials offered the OFWs P10,000 in financial assistance upon their arrival in the Philippines.

Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Raul Hernandez said a second batch of OFWs was due to arrive this weekend.

He also said a Filipino is due to leave Wednesday night or Thursday morning from Tripoli en route to Benghazi. From Benghazi, the Filipino will proceed to Cairo and then take a flight to Manila.

Hernandez maintained the DFA will continue to look after the safety of Filipinos in Libya.

“Yan lang ang ginagawa natin. We are always making sure ang ating kababayan doon are helped especially distressed OFWs na dapat bigyan ng tulong kung anuman ang kailangan na tulong,” he said in an interview on dwIZ radio Wednesday morning. — JE/KBK, GMA News
