A Filipino domestic worker in Hong Kong has stepped into the baseball field, batting for the Chinese administrative region as part of one of its teams in the international women’s cup it hosts yearly.

Reyzelyn Fulo Villanueva, the lone foreign player of Hong Kong’s iTeam, was even named “most valuable player” (MVP) at last January’s Phoenix Cup.

As part of iTeam, she competed against other players from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the United States.

According to the video report by GMA News stringer Azon Canete, Villanueva used to play softball when she was in high school here in the Philippines.

She also competed for the Philippines against teams from India, Korea, and Singapore, the report said.

Au Wing Leung, head coach of the other Hong Kong team, Allies, said Villanueva has “a good sense” of what baseball is about.

“She [has] a very good power. In terms of power, she’s good. On techniques, she still has to work a little bit harder. But in general, she’s in the top 20,” he told GMA News.

Au said players for Hong Kong baseball teams are picked regardless of their nationality.

The screening process lets in around 30 players “who have the potential to represent Hong Kong,” he said.

For her part, Villanueva urged her fellow domestic workers to aim higher and follow their passion.

“’Wag lang po tayong tumigil sa pangarap natin… Kung mayroon kayong potential na itinatago sa sarili ninyo, ilabas n’yo po ‘yan,” she told GMA News. “Sundin po nila kung ano ‘yung nasa puso nila. Malay n’yo ‘yun po kumbaga ang mag-aangat sa’yo.” – VVP, GMA News
