HONG KONG –A team of Filipinos based in Hong Kong raised more than P60,000 in poverty-reduction and climate change funds by participating in the charity event, Oxfam Trailwalker 2009.
Philippine Consul General Claro Cristobal congratulated the Filipino trailwalkers and their support crew for their achievement in raising at least HK$10,300 (P61,800).
Cristobal said the HK-based Pinoy team, fielded by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Hong Kong (UPAA-HK), finished the 102-kilometer course in 36 hours and 23 minutes on November 21, 2009.
The team is composed of Jerico Abila, Victor Bautista, Wilbert Jarata and Mario Libunao, Jr. – all of whom are employed by local companies and are members of UPAA-HK. A support team led by UPAA-HK president Gal Roma joined them at three of the 10 checkpoints along the route.
The team began hiking in Pak Tam Chung in eastern Hong Kong at 11 a.m. on November 20. They completed the walk at 11:30 p.m. the next day at Tai Tong, a village on the western side of the city.
The support team prepared meals for the hikers in each of the three major checkpoints. The crew also provided sleeping bags, painkillers and “hilot” (massage) service to reinvigorate the hikers and enable them to proceed with their adventure.
Meanwhile, Cristobal applauded long-distance runners from the Philippines who also joined the event.
The Pinoy Ultra Runners, a team organized by a runner’s club in the Philippines had three men and one lady hiker. They finished the course in 30 hours and 10 minutes.
