LONDON – Thirty-five overseas Filipino workers recently received their diploma on basic computer skills in London.
The graduates were composed of domestic helpers, nannies and housekeepers completed the five-week training on e-learning course spearheaded by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office-Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (POLO-OWWA) office of the Philippine Embassy in London.
Housekeeper Josephine Alicando, 50, and her daughter Michelle were among those who finished the course.
Josephine bought a laptop but did not know how to operate it. She and her daughter both had very limited knowledge of computers.
Armed with the basic knowledge in computer, they are now proud to say their weekends have been spent meaningfully.
They were also excited to share that they have been exploring different search engines online which they find very liberating.
Michelle said the mother-daughter tandem worked well in the class.
“Hindi po ako nahihiya. Natutuwa nga ako sa mama ko kasi nagtuturuan kaming dalawa,” said Michelle.
In his address to the graduates, Philippine Ambassador to the UK, Antonio Lagdameo, praised them for their contribution to the Philippine economy and for the effort they put into learning new skills.
The graduates were also elated that their batch was presented to President Arroyo on her recent visit to the UK.
